Professional Match Officials Application

Become A Paid Match Official

Rugby PA has announced the creation of a referee program where match officials are recruited, trained, assigned, and paid by the organization. This group of professional match officials (PMO) will be responsible for covering all Rugby PA competitions, in both the spring and fall season. Rugby PA is looking to hire 50 referees to take part in the 2024 season.

Do I need to be a certified referee already?

To become a PMO, you do not already need to be a certified referee. Rugby PA will be hosting a Training & Certification Day on 1/21/24 in Pittsburgh and 2/3/24 in Downingtown. Cost is $85 to register for course, but will be reimbursed once you referee a Rugby PA Match.

How much will I be paid?

Rugby PA has announced a payment structure that rewards our officials for their availability and efforts. Below is the pay structure for the 2024 Seasons.

  • Availability Fee - $50 (Paid out if you are available but not assigned a match)

  • Match Fee - $150

  • 7s Tournament Fee - $250

  • Gas Mileage Stipend - $25 per 100 miles

  • End of Year Performance Bonuses

How often will I be paid?

Rugby PA will pay via direct deposit weekly after the match official submits their match reports.

How many weekends must I work?

Rugby PA will work with its PMO to ensure the matches fit within their schedules. Rugby PA plays most of its matches on Sunday afternoons. PMO’s will be expected to be available for a minimum of 6 weekends throughout the spring season and 5 weekends in the fall.

When are the seasons?

Rugby PA 2024 spring season runs from Sunday, March 17th to Sunday, May 19th. The fall sevens season runs from Sunday, September 15th to Sunday, November 3rd.
